When a child has been absent, it is necessary that the parent send a note of explanation to the teacher. This may not necessarily excuse the child, but it will enable the teacher to meet state requirements for attendance records.
Unexcused Absences and Tardinesses: Three tardies accumulated by a student will equal one unexcused absence. After two unexcused absences (six unexcused tardinesses), the parents and student will receive a letter of warning. If three unexcused absences accumulate (or nine unexcused tardinesses), the family will be requested to come before the school board to discuss the problem. This is for one semester; however, in accordance with Pennsylvania state law, after three unexcused absences per year the problem would be referred to the public school district’s truant officer.
Educational Leave: A parent may remove a child from school for an educational leave of up to five days per year. Anything over five days will be unexcused. For an educational leave, the work must be made up in an equal number of days plus one, or it will receive a score of zero. It is the responsibility of the parent to arrange for after-school tutoring on any new concepts covered during the student’s absence.
Suspension Policy: The principal has the prerogative of dismissing a student. Should suspension become necessary, the parents and/or student may have to meet with the school board. MORE |
